There is no burden like a captain's burden — and Harmanpreet Kaur looked utterly liberated without it. Playing her first series since handing over the captaincy to Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet smashed an unbeaten 91 off 41 balls as India beat Zimbabwe by 92 runs in the third women's T20I at Raipur on Tuesday, completing a 3-0 series sweep.
India elected to bat, and Shafali Verma set the tone early — 69 off 37 with six fours and five sixes. Anushka Sharma chipped in with 28, but once Harmanpreet walked in at No. 4 in the eighth over, the night belonged to her. A scratchy start gave way to mayhem: she reached fifty off 25 balls and finished 91 not out with 10 fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 221.95. Only the overs running out denied her a century.
Zimbabwe's chase never got off the ground. Kelis Ndlovu fell for a golden duck off the first ball, and though Beloved Biza (44) and Sharne Mayers (60) shared an 82-run stand, their run-a-ball partnership could not touch the required rate. Nandani Sharma's 3/18 led a disciplined bowling effort as Zimbabwe limped to 124/7.
"I don't think there is any pressure anymore. I think now it's all about enjoying myself on the field." — Harmanpreet Kaur, after her match-winning 91*
At 37, with single-figure scores and a night in the dugout behind her in this series, this was a statement innings. Freed from leadership, Harmanpreet reminded everyone why she has been Indian cricket's fiercest finisher for a decade — and with the home T20 World Cup on the horizon, India's batting order suddenly looks a lot more dangerous.
Zimbabwe leave Raipur without a win, but Biza's all-round showing (3/50 and 44) and Mayers' fifty give them something to build on as their women's programme keeps growing.
