Arafat Minhas 59 & 6/40: Pakistan Thrash England by 87 Runs — 2 from 2 in the Tri-Series

Night ODI scene in Rawalpindi — a spinning ball beats the bat as stumps shatter under floodlights

One player, seven of the ten wickets, a maiden ODI fifty and a run-out for the finale. Pakistan beat England by 87 runs in the second ODI of the tri-series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, and 21-year-old Arafat Minhas produced one of the finest all-round days in Pakistan's ODI history to make it two wins from two.

Harry Brook won the toss and bowled first, gambling on dew later. For a while it looked inspired. Fakhar Zaman clipped the first ball of the match to midwicket, Saim Ayub fell to the short ball, Babar Azam was undone by Will Jacks' drift for 34, and at 81 for 4 in the 19th over Pakistan's innings was falling apart.

The Rescue: Nawaz and Minhas Rebuild from 81/4

Hasan Nawaz walked in at the wreckage and played the innings of his young ODI career — 79 off 74 balls with four sixes, a fifty brought up off 46 deliveries. He put on 78 for the fifth wicket with Minhas, who then cracked 72 off 49 alongside Faheem Ashraf's explosive 39 off 26.

Minhas, playing only his fifth ODI, raised his maiden international fifty with a gorgeous cover drive off Sonny Baker — and he needed to survive England's butterfingers to do it. He was dropped three times, costliest on 12; Nawaz was also shelled on 28 by Gus Atkinson. England were made to pay: Pakistan roared from 81/4 to 302/9.

The Collapse: England's Last Seven Fall for 50

For 15 overs, England's chase looked like a formality. Ben Duckett (45 off 46) and Tom Banton (57 off 53) flew to 91 without loss, punishing everything loose. Then Minhas took the ball, and the innings unravelled spectacularly: England's last seven wickets fell for 50 runs.

Brook was pinned lbw for 5 by one that turned sharply through the gate, Jordan Cox was trapped lbw, Adil Rashid went first ball, and Minhas sealed the night with a direct-hit run-out of Atkinson — a hand in seven of England's ten dismissals. Haris Rauf (2/32) and Naseem Shah, who bowled Joe Root for 33, applied the squeeze. England folded for 215 with 11.2 overs unused — Brook admitted afterwards his side got "too careful" once the spin took hold.

The numbers tell the story: Minhas is only the third Pakistan men's player ever to score a half-century and take five wickets in the same ODI, after Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq — and just the 25th in all of men's ODI history. Pakistan sit pretty at the top of the tri-series table; the roadshow moves on to Sri Lanka vs England at Rawalpindi on Thursday, with the final on October 28.
