South Africa produced one of their finest Test victories to thrash Australia by an innings and 31 runs in the 2nd Test at St George's Park, Gqeberha — levelling the series 1-1 and setting up a decider in Cape Town. After rain wiped out the first session of the final day, the Proteas needed six wickets with Australia 156 for 4; they got them with more than 28 overs to spare.
At the close of day two, South Africa were 97 for 5 and staring down the barrel. What followed was a stunning turnaround: Temba Bavuma's career-best 179 anchored a recovery that carried them to 425 for 9 declared, with Marco Jansen (85) and Simon Harmer (82) providing the muscle — Bavuma and Harmer's 183-run stand is South Africa's highest eighth-wicket partnership in Tests. Jansen then took the new ball and skittled Australia for 99, enforcing the follow-on — Australia's first innings defeat since 2023.
With the morning session lost to rain, Australia resumed needing to bat through the day and were given real hope by Travis Head, who moved from 87 overnight to a 13th Test century, 121 off 190 balls. And nightwatchman Scott Boland produced one of the great tail-end blockades: 40 off 166 balls — his previous Test best was 21 — in partnerships of 59 with Head, 16 with Smith and 31 with Carey that carried Australia past tea.
But Wiaan Mulder, covering for the injured Anrich Nortje, broke the stand — Head chopping on for 121, then Boland's resistance ending — before Kagiso Rabada won his duel with Steven Smith. Fittingly, Jansen finished it: Josh Hazlewood slashing to slip, Australia 295 all out an hour after tea.
