Timing is everything in selection races — and Sam Konstas could not have picked a better moment. The 21-year-old opener struck his first Sheffield Shield century since December for New South Wales against Western Australia at the WACA on Wednesday, right as Australia's current Test openers stutter through the tour of South Africa.
Konstas batted with the controlled aggression that made him famous on his debut summer, reaching tea unbeaten on 82 from 111 balls and completing the hundred by nudging seamer Kieran Elliott through the covers for two. Two substantial scores in one match, at first-class cricket's toughest venue for opening batters — selectors will have noticed.
The round had plenty more for Australia's selectors to chew on. Australian ODI regular Xavier Bartlett inflicted reigning champions South Australia's first defeat in more than a year with a five-wicket haul for Queensland — a reminder of his red-ball credentials. And in Hobart, Victorian rising star Harry Hoekstra continued his breakout with four second-innings wickets to finish with nine for the match — though it was not enough to stop Tasmania pushing Victoria to the brink of defeat.
The New Zealand home Tests are the prize, and with the incumbents misfiring abroad, the door Konstas burst through as a teenager is creaking open again. Domestic runs are the only currency that matters — and he is minting them.
