Debut at 30: Marques Ackerman's Long Road to the Proteas

Marques Ackerman's Test debut at 30 โ€” lone batsman walking out at dawn

On Sunday morning at St George's Park in Gqeberha, Marques Ackerman did something most cricketers dream about and almost none achieve at his age: he received his first Test cap for South Africa โ€” at 30 years old. Opening the batting against Australia's fearsome pace attack, on a rain-wrecked day, with the series on the line. It was twelve years in the making.

The backstory is what makes this debut special. Ackerman matriculated from St Stithians College in Johannesburg in 2014, where he played in the shadow of another talented left-hander: Ryan Rickelton. Rickelton's star rose early; Ackerman's rise was the slow kind โ€” years as a Dolphins middle-order mainstay, batting at No. 3, regarded for a long time as a white-ball player. Then came the purple patch: a magnificent 256 for South Africa A in the winter, and suddenly the red-ball conversation could no longer exclude him. When Tony de Zorzi was ruled out injured, the selectors finally made the call.

Ackerman's debut landed inside one of Test cricket's rarest statistical quirks. Nineteen players aged 30 or older are featuring in this Gqeberha Test โ€” equalling the second-highest tally in men's Test history, a mark last reached a century ago. All eleven Australians are 30 or older; eight of the eleven South Africans are too. The oldest men on the field โ€” Simon Harmer, Steve Smith and Scott Boland โ€” are 37, while Australia's youngest player, Matt Renshaw, is 30, older than South Africa's youngest, Marco Jansen, by four years.

A Debut of Two Halves

The cricket itself was cruel. Day one was destroyed by rain โ€” only 12.2 overs were possible โ€” and in the brief window of play, Scott Boland struck twice in two balls, removing Aiden Markram and David Bedingham. Through it all, Ackerman survived, unbeaten on 5, and produced the day's most human moment: as the covers came on during a rain delay, the debutant waved to his family gathered in the stands โ€” a small gesture that said everything about the journey.

Day two brought more rain, a delayed start, and then the harshest of welcomes. Ackerman fell for 6 off 38 balls, caught behind by Alex Carey off Boland, as South Africa slumped to 97 for 5 at stumps. Boland finished with 4 for 31, Mitchell Starc took 1 for 27, and only captain Temba Bavuma (41 not out) looked settled. Debuts do not come tougher than facing this attack, in these conditions, with your team 1-0 down in the series.

"We believe he can make the opening role his own. We're in a phase of adjustment at the top, but the talent is there." โ€” Temba Bavuma, South Africa captain, backing his debutant

Why Bavuma's Backing Matters

Bavuma's support is not empty comfort. Ackerman is not a natural opener โ€” he has batted at No. 3 for the Dolphins โ€” but South Africa have a proud history of repositioning batters at the top: Herschelle Gibbs and Neil McKenzie both thrived after being moved up to open. The reshuffle was forced by form and fitness: Rickelton's form at the top waned after his 259 against Pakistan in January 2025 (only one half-century since), so the left-hander has been shifted down the order and handed the wicketkeeping gloves with Kyle Verreynne omitted.

The changes run deeper. Kagiso Rabada returned from a hamstring injury, Matthew Breetzke was drafted in to bolster the batting, while Verreynne, Tristan Stubbs and Keshav Maharaj were left out. Australia made one change of their own โ€” and what a change: Nathan Lyon out, Scott Boland in, a selection that has already decided two days of cricket.

What It Means for the Series

Australia lead the three-match series 1-0 after their 214-run demolition in Durban, and the world Test champions are wobbling: South Africa have slipped to third in the World Test Championship standings, with Australia on top and New Zealand second, both sides eyeing the 2027 final. The third Test begins at Newlands in Cape Town on October 27. For Ackerman, the equation is simpler โ€” runs in the second innings, and the opening slot could be his for years. At 30, he knows better than anyone that opportunities like this do not come twice.

The Road to the Cap: Little-Known Facts

Debuts at 30 are rare because cricket rarely waits. Marques Ackerman waited anyway โ€” and when the call finally came, he walked out to open against Australia. Whatever the second innings brings, the cap is his forever.
