The gavel is coming home. The Indian Premier League's 2027 mini-auction will be held on December 16, 2026 at ITC Grand Goa, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed to Hindustan Times β the first time in four years the IPL auction will take place on Indian soil. After three consecutive auctions staged overseas in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi, the 20th season's player auction returns to India, with a franchise briefing scheduled for December 15, a day before the main event.
The date emerged from a BCCI logistics note sent to the ten franchises β reported by Cricbuzz β primarily so teams could lock in travel and accommodation. Franchises must submit their final lists of retained and released players by November 15, 2026, which means the next month will be filled with trade speculation, release drama and auction-table mathematics.

Here is everything confirmed so far about the IPL 2027 auction: the date, the venue, the retention deadline, the scheduling clash with international cricket, and what a mini-auction really means for the ten franchises.
The return to India is the headline. The last three IPL auctions were held overseas β in Dubai (2024), Jeddah (2025) and Abu Dhabi (2026) β turning the auction into a travelling spectacle. This time, the BCCI deliberately chose home turf. Saikia told ANI: "This year, after hosting the IPL auction in three foreign locations, Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Abu Dhabi last year, we are going to host it in Goa in the month of December."
It was not an easy decision. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal had earlier acknowledged that the board wanted to bring the auction back to India but struggled to find a suitable venue β December is peak wedding season, and the kind of five-star property that can host ten franchises, broadcasters and officials gets booked out months in advance. ITC Grand Goa, a beachside luxury property, fits the bill: big enough, exclusive enough, and far enough from the noise for franchises to plan in peace.
The final mini-auction of the 2023β2027 cycle, ahead of the league's 20th season
There is a quirk in the calendar that cricket fans will not miss. On the very same day β December 16 β India are scheduled to play Sri Lanka in the second ODI of a home series at Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. An IPL auction has coincided with an India international before, but this would be the first time both events run simultaneously on Indian soil.
No change to either schedule has been announced yet. Expect a long day for Indian cricket fans: ODI cricket in the afternoon, auction drama in the evening.
This will be the last mini-auction of the current 2023β2027 cycle β a full mega auction will reset squads again before the 2028 season. In a mini-auction, most squads remain largely intact; franchises retain their core and bid only to fill specific vacancies. The retained/released lists due November 15 will reveal exactly which gaps each team needs to plug β and how much purse remains to plug them.
Trade activity is already underway. Reports suggest Delhi Capitals have been the most active team in the pre-auction trading window, moving on Rishabh Pant and Zeeshan Ansari after a disappointing sixth-place finish last season. Off the field, Delhi also made a headline coaching appointment: Sourav Ganguly is set to take over as head coach ahead of IPL 2027. Expect more franchises to make moves before the November 15 deadline.
The official schedule is not out yet, but reports earlier this year suggested the BCCI is considering starting the season on March 15 and wrapping it by May 15, 2027 β slightly earlier than the traditional late-March to late-May window. The idea is to reduce the number of matches played in peak summer conditions. The tournament typically runs from late March into May or early June; the March 15 to May 30 window reported by some outlets suggests the board is still weighing its options.

The real drama happens before the auction, not at it. Three things will define the next month:
Twenty seasons in, the IPL auction remains cricket's most-watched boardroom drama. This time it is back home in Goa β and with the 2028 mega auction looming after it, December 16 is the last chance for franchises to fine-tune their cores before the reset. The bidding war is officially on.
